After you get the job, you will need to get a work permit if you are under 18. Here are the steps:
- Fill out the work permit (Application to Employ Minors Form).
- Give it to your employer to fill out.
- Have your parent(s) sign it.
- Bring the form and your identification such as a birth certificate, driver’s license, or baptismal certificate to your school or school board office.
- Employers have to abide by certain rules. If the employer has bad work conditions for a minor, then your work permit could be denied. Luckily this doesn’t happen often.
- Bring the work permit back to your employer for their files
WORK CONDITIONS FOR MINORS
If you are 14-17 years old
- Your employer must provide you with an uninterrupted break of at least 30 minutes for every 5-hour work period.
- You can work 40 hours a week only from June 1 – Labor Day (basically summer break).
- Only during the summer can students work between the hours of 7 pm and 7 am.
There are tighter rules for 14 and 15-year-olds
- You can only work 3 hours on a school day.
- You cannot work more than 18 hours during a school week.
You can only work an 8-hour shift on a non-school day.
