An interview is your opportunity to make a powerful first impression and convince a potential employer to hire you. During an interview, you are promoting yourself. Be proud of your accomplishments and confident in yourself. An employer can tell a lot about you through your body language and the way you present yourself. Tell them you are the right person through your presentation.
Common interview questions:
- Tell me about yourself
- What are your strengths? Weaknesses?
- Tell me about a time you faced an obstacle at work
- Tell me about a time you encountered a conflict with a coworker
- Tell me about your experience at ________ (interviewer will pick something from your resume)
- Where do you see yourself in five years?
- What are three adjectives coworkers would use to describe you?
- Why should we hire you?
When answering these questions, remain calm. An employer is looking to see that you are someone who can work with others, take direction, and apply different skills to multiple situations. Prepare answers for these common questions ahead of time. Look at your resume before the interview, and think of examples of strengths and weaknesses, how you positively resolved a conflict with a coworker, and other successes.
Put your best self forward:
- Dress in professional attire: slacks or a skirt and a cardigan or blazer for women, and slacks and a blazer or suit jacket for men
- Greet the interviewer with direct eye contact and a firm handshake
- Sit up straight and don’t cross your arms
- Do your research. Know specifics about the company and the position
- Keep answers short
- Bring your resume with you
- Have 2-3 questions prepared to ask the interviewers at the end
- Send a brief email the following day thanking the interviewers for their time
- Be yourself. An employer can tell when you are being genuine
- Be positive! You’re more likely to get hired
